It’s raining. Jaclyn woke up early to come with me and Rufus for a morning walk. She talked and sang, and bossed Rufus around.
Also today was a special day as Daddy came with us to kindergarten. After dropping her off we decided to go to the Adoption office to “get pre-informed in view of adoption”. It’s a mandatory first step. All the ladies there know us. And there was the social worker who was responsible for Jaclyn before we were matched. She saw us and asked: “did you hear the news?”. “What news?” I ask. Jaclyn has a biological sister that entered the protection services system last week. She is not adoptable yet because of paperwork that takes a few months.
Jaclyn has been talking about wanting/having a sister for quite some time now. Her biological sister is one year and one month old. And the law says that we have priority in adopting her, for the purpose of reuniting siblings. This is surreal. And both Conrad and I have a hard time containing our excitement. Is this really possible? Even after we met Jaclyn I often feared that someone will call and say it was a mistake in the papers and she can’t be adopted by us or at all. I treaded lightly, hands open, holding gently the gift, praying. This law of placing siblings in the same family is based on the many studies over the years. Even after maturity, adopted children who seek to find out more about their biological families, they remain connected with the biological sibling, not the biological parents.
So step one has been taken. And what a first step it was! We’ve been officially (re)informed about adoption. Now we have to start the file: medical evaluation and certificates, psychiatric evaluations for the three of us, notarized declarations and notarized certificates.
We appreciate your prayers that God would lead the way to adopting Jaclyn’s biological sister. Pray that we won’t lose physical and mental stamina, that the road hurdles won’t be insurmountable. That His story continues to be written in our growing family.
