A game of building up
How tall could it go?
Steady. Thoughtful. Calculated.
Pictures on the wall of their phones
Talking about it and holding hands.
Visiting each other
Making plans
Knowing friends
Involving the parents.
Building relationships that interwove,
Strengthening it
or knit it tighter together.
Does it feel safe?
Or does it feel suffocating?
The taller we go
The more dramatic the crash
If that’s what is in store for it
A bit too comfortable
And confident
And daring
To show off
I think.
I worry about how it looks
Mainly because others have different social standards
And teens hanging out means crossing boundaries
Of comfort or emotional safety
But mostly due to curiosity.
Adults jump to conclusions about teens
And it’s a disservice to all.
