The week was way full and exciting, and we were and are energized by it. I guess deep down we are extroverts who surface occasionally.
I just came back from the youth group meeting. People have different opinions, personalities, preferences, and I think they trust this group enough to be themselves even when it produces tension. Tension is good in moderation. But good! I wish some of the shyer people would let themselves be known more, but there is room for everyone indeed. But I take my time to know them all. They are beautiful!
I’ve been pondering: What makes a good leader? I still remember when my store leader invited me into his office and we talked at length and then he asked me if I want to be a lead. I was the newest creative, and I thought he was crazy, or he had the wrong person in his office. But he was serious. My favorite part about the apple leaders was that they took time to observe, to listen and to challenge growth through trust and encouragement. He was right. I am glad I pursued and developed leadership skills. I had the privilege to work with the most fun and talented people in the business world.
Side note: In my life after Apple I started a business with my husband and I catch myself saying things like complete solution, customer focus, marketing through education. It makes me happy.
Brian told me a long long time ago that I am a natural leader. I was 19. I didn’t know it then, but it stuck with me. Today I find my voice is strong and my walk is steady. I think finding who you are, assessing your beliefs and building on them, growing in knowledge and experience despite the resistance, taking comfort that kindness is powerful, walking your own path despite the noise, were all important on this journey. A good leader serves. A good leader listens. A good leader is aware of of what people say, but he acts decisively according to what he believes and knows to be right. I sometimes miss the consistent and relevant encouragement, abundant development and working with likeminded people at Apple.
I enjoy the company of this young group. They challenge me and they bring out the best in me.
And now, a glimpse into our social week…
