Rufus

I have always loved dogs—maybe not all dogs—but most of them. Over the years my family has had a couple of them, first Patrick when I was growing up, and then Cafe later on in California. They are a calming presence and can be great companions.

During this process of readying ourselves for adopting a child, we thought it might be a good idea to prime-the-pump by taking on a daily routine of responsibility with a puppy. I’m not comparing the importance of a child to a dog, but in some ways, daily feeding, walking, cleaning up after, etc. it’s a lesser version.

This past week at the psalms camp with the PBCC team, we (read: I) met and fell in love with a small six-week-old puppy and were tickled to find that the owners were willing to let us adopt him. After a number of “adult” discussions (mainly me making puppy eyes at Vio and her taking the more responsible course…) we agreed to adopt him.

Now, we have Rufus. He’s quietly napping at my feet as I type this after an exciting first morning in a car for the first time and in a new home. For those concerned, this will certainly Not replace adopting a child, we’re more excited than ever to go through that process and welcome a child into our home, there will just be a bit more fur now.
